The Biggest Steal and Reaches of the NFL Draft

Biggest Steal: Jermod Mccoy, Tennessee

Mccoy was drafted with the 101st overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft to the Las Vegas Raiders. During his first year with Tennessee Mccoy recorded 44 solo tackles, 9 pass breakups and 4 INTs. With a 50% completion parentage when targeted (CPWT), as a comparison a above average corners completion parentage when targeted is around 55%, so for McCoy to have only 50% puts him in an elite category. Most elite corners in the NFL hover around 45% (CPWT). So for Mccoy in his first year within a new system to put up those kind of numbers was beyond impressive. So why did he fall? Mccoy his senior year tore his ACL, and upon medical review, team doctors found that he has a bone plug to fix the cartilage in his knee. Increasing the chances of having a career ending injury, and the possibility of not being able to play at all. But he is still the potential steal of the draft because of the off chance he does play. If Mccoy is able to be healthy enough to play, the raiders would have gotten a top 15 talent in the draft in the 4th round.

Biggest Reach: T.Y Simpson, Alabama

At 13th overall the Rams drafted a Quarterback, then proceeded to extend their franchise superstar Quarterback Matthew Stafford to a 2 year extension. The pick at the time was interesting, Simpson only started the 2025 season for the Crimson Tide. Completing 305 of 473 passes for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions. A very productive first season starting, his ceiling was what the Rams were so interested in, he has the potential to be the next starting Quarterback of the Rams after the Stafford era comes to an end. The reach comes from the fact that Stafford at the minimum has 2 years left to play, the rookie scale contract for a 1st round pick is 4 years. For 2 years Simpson will most likely never play and will try to be developed. The Rams are in win now mode, they traded a haul for Myles Garrett and Trent Mcduffie. Yet they pick a Quarterback with their premium first round pick. This is a team that went all the way to the NFC Championship this past season, they didn't use the pick to bustler what could be on of the greatest rosters in NFL history. Along with the potential of the 2027 draft being on of the best for the quarterback position in decades. All in all, the Rams could have bettered their chances to win now, instead they have only 2 years to decide if Simpson is there future before his contract is up.
